Real Customer Case – Silica (SiO₂) with SRM125 Roller Mill

A major Asian producer of high-purity precipitated and fumed silica achieved the following results using one set of Epic Powder SRM125 roller mill:

  • Feed material: Precipitated silica, D50 ≈ 18 µm
  • Target: D90 ≤ 10 µm
  • Achieved: D10 = 1.8 µm | D50 = 4.5 µm | D90 = 9.8 µm | D97 = 12.5 µm
  • Stable production capacity: 360 kg/h
  • Specific energy consumption: 185–195 kWh/t

The customer reported 20–25% lower energy consumption and far superior particle size consistency compared to their previous imported mechanical mills.

Why Ultra-Fine and Nano Calcium Carbonate Matter in Plastics

Calcium carbonate is the most widely used mineral filler in the plastics industry due to its low cost, wide availability, low density, and excellent whiteness and reinforcement properties. When ground to micron or sub-micron levels using Epic Powder roller mills, calcium carbonate delivers dramatic improvements in mechanical performance, surface finish, and functionality.

Key Advantages of Different Calcium Carbonate Types in Plastics

Light Calcium Carbonate (PCC): Superior reinforcement, significantly improves impact strength and toughness.

Heavy Calcium Carbonate (GCC): Excellent cost reduction, high dispersion, similar refractive index to resins → easy coloring, high brightness.

Nano Calcium Carbonate (<100 nm): Highest reinforcement, used in premium automotive, wire & cable, and film applications.

Major Plastic Applications of Ultra-Fine Calcium Carbonate Produced by Epic Powder Roller Mills

Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)

PVC

Ultra-fine CaCO₃ (D97 6–10 µm or finer) is widely filled in rigid PVC profiles, pipes, window frames, siding, and soft PVC films, artificial leather, wire & cable sheathing.
Benefits:

  • Improves dimensional stability and surface smoothness
  • Enhances flame retardancy and chemical resistance
  • Acts as viscosity regulator in PVC paste
  • Reduces surface scratching and bending-whitening compared with coarse grades

Polyethylene (PE)

PE Wax
PE Wax

50–90 wt% ultra-fine heavy calcium carbonate is compounded with HDPE/LDPE to produce “calcium-plastic” corrugated sheets, pallets, and foamed wood-plastic substitutes.
Benefits:

    • Higher rigidity, compressive strength, and heat deformation temperature than pure PE
    • Excellent cold resistance to water, shock, and sound
    • Lower cost and easier secondary processing (sawing, nailing, screwing)

    Polypropylene (PP)

    PP, PE filling masterbatch

Nano and active calcium carbonate (surface-treated) significantly improves tensile strength, flexural modulus, impact resistance, and heat resistance of PP.
Common applications: automotive bumpers dashboards, home appliance housings, IC trays, microwave oven parts, flame-retardant electrical components (TV high-voltage packs, coil bobbins, switch housings).
Self-extinguishing grades achieve UL94 V-0 with excellent electrical insulation that is minimally affected by temperature and humidity.
